The Composers

Andrea Gabrieli

Uncle of Giovanni Gabrieli, Andrea Gabrielli himself was born in Venice, singing in his youth in the choir of San Marco. In 1557 he took a position as organist at San Geremia in Cannaregio, and became court organist to Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria. He returned to Venice in 1566 and was appointed second organist at San Marco. His organ duets with Merulo, the principal organist, were extremely popular. In 1585 he took over from Merulo as chief organist there, but died the following year.

Gabrielli had many pupils, most famously his nephew Giovanni and also Hans Leo Hassler. His many works cover a wide range of styles and veer from the highly sacred to the highly profane; he was as at home in motets as in comic madrigals.
