The Composers
Sofiya Asgatovna Gubaydulina
Sofia Gubaydulina was born in Chistopol, studying music firstly at the Conservatory of Kazan, then at the Moscow Conservatoire. A true individual in an age where it was only just becoming safe to be so, Gubaydulina’s compositions often feature bizarre instrumental combinations; her works for Russian accordian, or Bayane, are a case in point, as is the Concerto for Basson and Low Strings. Like many contemporaries, she has her own particular sense of tonality, which although frequently grounded is not afraid to take ideas to their logical conclusion. Her St John Passion is a particularly moving work.
