The Composers

Dietrich Buxtehude

Little is known about Dietrich Buxtehude's early years, but from 1668 he is known to have been chief organist at Lübeck, one of the most prestigious posts in North Germany.  He remained there until he died in 1707, which allowed both George Frideric Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach  to travel there in order to listen to a musician whose reputation had clearly spread far and wide.  A large quantity of organ music and sacred vocal music has survived, mainly in the form of vocal concertos, chorale settings and arias.  As one might expect from someone who influenced Bach, Buxtehude was a contrapuntal master, and we can infer a significant influence on Bach's cantata writing as well as his organ works.
