The Composers
Johan Wikmanson
Notes
Largely unknown outside his native Sweden, Wikmanson is chiefly remembered for his string quartets, only three of which survive. Heavily influenced by, and dedicated to, Haydn, all three were published with the help of the old master in 1801, the year after Wikmanson's death.
The Swedish composer learned his lesson well from the founder of the string quartet genre, and the result in No. 2 is an attractive work that rests easily on the ears. A charming variation movement and a stately menuetto follow the seriousness and skilled textures of the Allegro di molto before a quicksilver Prestissimo brings proceedings to a lively close.
