Notes
With Tony-nominated music by Burton Lane and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever should perhaps be better known than it is. Opening on 17 October 1965 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York, it ran for 280 performances and starred Barbara Harris and John Cullum. It prompted a film version in 1970 starring Barbara Streisand and directed by Vicente Minelli but seems to be revived only periodically.
On a Clear Day tells the story of chain-smoking Daisy who, in trying to kick the habit, undergoes hynopsis by Dr Bruckner and discovers her past life as 18th century heiress Melinda. Predictably Daisy falls for Bruckner while Bruckner becomes enamoured of her alter ego, Melinda. The musical is probably most famous for its title song though other highlights include Hurry! It's Lovely Up Here and What Did I Have That I Don't Have. The original cast recording won a Grammy award.
