A composer of operetta and revue songs, Maurice Yvain is best known for his song, Mon homme, later performed as My Man by Billie Holiday. He also composed film scores during the 1930s, most notably for the French film, La Belle Equipe (1936). Yvain's tuneful, and attractively elegant, music continues to maintain a degree of popularity.
Yvain was born in Paris on 12 February 1891 and, after attending the Paris Conservatoire, began his career as an orchestral player and accompanist in the Paris music halls. During the 1920s he began to write operettas, including the major successes Ta bouche (1922) and the Maurice Chevalier vehicle Là-haut (1923), and provided songs for a series of revues at the Casino de Paris.
Alive to the influences of American popular music, Yvain incorporated elements of dance style into his enormously successful 1935 operetta, Au soleil du Mexique. He had his last major success with Chanson gitane in 1946 and died on 28 July 1965.
