The Violoncello

Classical Academy | Guide To The Orchestra

The cello has a deep, rich sound that produces some exquisitely expressive melodies. As a critical part of the orchestra, cellos provide the bass line and harmonies that characterise the symphonies and orchestral works we know and love. As a solo instrument, the 20th century brought a great increase in repertoire for cellists, partly due to the influence of virtuoso player Mstislav Rostropovich who inspired and commissioned dozens of works. Even pop bands love the cello - who can forget its appearance in Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles...

Enjoy our recommended selection of cello music, from modern works by composers like Paul Hindemith to romantic works by Camille Saint-Saens and an interesting collection of solo pieces for piano and cello by conductor André Previn.
