Sonata Back to Musical Genre
This term has referred to a variety of compositions over time, from the Baroque era, through the Classical and Romantic eras, to the present. However, they do have certain features in common: they are all instrumental works with several movements or sections. The vast majority of examples you are likely to come across will either be works written for solo piano, or another instrument accompanied by piano.
