On 15 June 763 BC, the first ever historical solar eclipse was recorded in China, yet that may not be the first moment a solar eclipse affected humanity. It is even said that as early as 4000 years ago the Emperor Zhong Kang beheaded two astronomers for failing to predict an eclipse. The Chinese were particularly interested in the phenomenon. The 4th century BC astronomer Shi Shen described the prediction of eclipses by using the relative positions of the Moon and the Sun. This amazing natural phenomenon was seen in ancient times as an omen with supernatural powers. Even today, the strange blackening of the sun can be frightening to those who don't know how it occurs. Today, we've developed the technology to look at the eclipse with indirect project, and children and buddy astronomers alike delight in doing so. In honour of the ancient Chinese dedication to the solar eclipse, we've got a special playlist of music dedicated to Chinese American contemporary classical composer Chou Wen-Chung.
