Who would have thought that Verdi wrote string quartets? Apparently it happened when he was rehearsing a new opera, and the soprano became ill. He had nothing to do waiting in his hotel room for the rehearsals to resume, so as an exercise wrote this piece! Wonderful - I think the cello theme is particularly lilting - vocal like a voice, but also instrumental. He was after all a fine orchestral composer.
