Lied, the German term for song, describes a musical genre of art songs composed largely in the 19th century when romantic composers took inspiration from poetry. These sublime pieces, often arranged for piano and solo voice, have poetic pastoral or romantic themes. Franz Schubert wrote more than 600 Lieder, elevating folk melodies with emotive drama and using pictorial accompaniments to set the scene. Robert Schumann spent long years ardently pursuing his love Clara, waiting in cafes for a glimpse of her after a concert and writing endless love letters. This led to the outpouring of his yearning through songs that reflect this bitter-sweet courtship, with all its tenderness marred by uncertainty. His heartfelt Widmung is dedicated to Clara.
