Mozart's Sacred Music and the Requiem 0:00

Mozart's sacred music represents an important part of his oeuvre that can often be overlooked. Whilst his Requiem has garnered great fame and praise, often surrounding the strained situation in which it was written in the composer's dying days, his other sacred works are rich in musical delights. Mostly choral, his various masses present somewhat of a 'stylistic mosaic', combining elements of Gregorian chant with baroque and classical counterpoint traditions, and even more operatic elements that we see in his secular works for the stage. When all these elements come together, we are faced with some of the most powerful examples of sacred music ever to have been produced. The spiritual impact this would have had on Mozart's contemporaries can hardly be adequately contemplated, and these works continue to incite great feeling in listeners today.
