Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll tells the tale of a girl who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world of crazy characters and nonsensical happenings. Who can forget the Cheshire Cat or the Mad Tea-Party? As fun for children as it is intriguing for adults, the book grabbed the attention of more than a few musicians. American composer David Del Tredici was obsessed with the Alice stories for years, writing four major works that follow chapters of the book through song and narration. Juxtaposing a full orchestra with a group of folk instruments, Del Tredici used what he called the "wildly unsymphonic" character of these instruments to replicate the childlike nature of Wonderland.
