The Impressionist movement in music stemmed mainly from France beginning in the late 19th century. Like its precursor in the visual arts, it preferred suggestion and atmosphere to the excesses of the Romantic era. The music often makes use of harmonic dissonance and uncommon scales, favouring short dreamy forms such as the nocturne and prelude. Debussy and Ravel are considered the two "great" Impressionist composers, although Debussy renounced the term, saying only "I am trying to do something different". Musical Impressionism filtered down to composers such as Satie, Scriabin, and Duruflé
