Philip Glass brought 'art music' to the public. Although his music is often called minimalist, he prefers to describe himself as a composer of "music with repetitive structures". A prolific composer, he has written operas, musical theatre works, symphonies, concertos, solo works, chamber music, and film scores, three of which have been nominated for Academy Awards. His music has ties to styles as diverse as classical (Schubert is his favourite composer), rock, ambient, electronic, and world music. Early admirers of his minimalism include popular musicians such as Brian Eno and David Bowie. Hypnotic and trance-like, Glass' music seems to lift the spirit and freeing the mind
