Edvard Grieg's Orchestral Music for Peer Gynt

Born on 15 June 1843, Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg's name is synonymous with an unforgettable two-phrase motif that makes up one theme from his orchestral incidental music for Peer Gynt.

"I have written something for the scene In the Hall of the Mountain King", he wrote. "Something that I literally can't bear listening to as it absolutely reeks of cow-pies, exaggerated Norwegian nationalism, and trollish self-satisfaction! But I have a hunch that the irony will be discernible."
