The Composers

John Dunstable

Astrologer, mathematician and composer John Dunstable was probably born in the Bedfordshire town of the same name in 1380. Very little is known of his life; he was canon of Hereford Cathedral between 1419 and 1440 and worked for the Duke of Bedford, who may well have taken him to Paris on official duties. Dunstable’s most notable innovations are the use of speech rhythms to partially dictate a text’s setting and the further development of motet form.
