The Composers

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco

Born in Florence he studied composition with Pizzetti, initially writing in an impressionist style. He rose to success after the First World War, the Second leading him to leave Italy in 1939 for America. His oeuvre encompasses a wide range of styles; he wrote many operas, concertos and much chamber music for many different combinations of instruments. Living, as he did in America, in Los Angeles, he was ideally placed to write film music, a medium in which he was able to exploit his aptitude for fluid, emotive music.
