Audran's breakthrough work was the operetta La mascotte, written in 1880 and first performed at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens on 29 December. The story of a girl who brings good luck as long as she remains a virgin, La mascotte was a huge hit internationally and is generally thought to have introduced the concept of the mascot, derived from a French word for witch, into everday use. What would football teams have done without it?!
