The Composers
Jan Dismas Zelenka
Born in Lounovice, Zelenka was educated in Prague and in 1710 joined the court orchestra in Dresden. His instrument was the double bass, but his compositions tended more towards the religious. After studies with Lotti in Venice (1716) and Fux in Vienna (1717-19) he returned to Dresden to assist Heinichen. He was awarded the title of Kirchen-Compositeur there in 1735; among his compositions are three Requiems, 21 masses and many motets.
