Jay Records is home of the musical. Jay Original Masterworks Edition recordings utilise the original book, music, lyrics and orchestrations of the musical masterworks. By recording the original version, the essence of these musical masterworks, as originally conceived by the authors and enjoyed by the public, is preserved for the new Digital era.  

Album artAmahl and the Night Visitors

Gian Carlo Menotti, the composer of this beloved and perennial children's opera, directed the Royal Opera House production of his masterwork and personally attended the recording of his production. This is the only stereo recording of the work and it features wonderful performances by James Rainbird as Amahl, Lorna Haywood as his mother, and English opera starts Donald Maxwell, John Dobson and Curtis Watson as the Three Kings.

This award winning musical contains lyrics by Martin Charnin and music by Charles Strouse. This is the cast album of the 30th anniversary production of Sandy Wilson's amazing and joyous musical. It is the only stereo recording of this masterwork and features such perrenial hit songs as I Could be Happy With You, A Room in Bloomsbury, Won't You Charleston With Me, It's Nicer in Nice, It's Never Too Late to Fall in Love and others. It stars Anna Quayle, Simon Green, Jane Wellman and Rosemary Ashe.

Cabaret

This first and only complete recording of Kander and Ebbs masterwork features a sensational cast amongst whom are Judi Dench, Jonathan Pryce, Fred Ebb, Maria Friedman, John Mark Ainsley, Gregg Edelman and a host of stars from London's West End and Broadway. The original Broadway orchestrations are played by the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Owen Edwards. The recording contains the complete score plus the new songs for the Broadway revival (1987) and the film.

Camelot

Richard Harris brought the stage version of Camelot to London following his film success in the role of Arthur. This is the original cast recording of that production. Also starring Fiona Fullerton and Robert Meadmore. This Album contains the only recording of the great end of Act I speech.

Candide

Scotish Opera's production of Leonard Bernstein's early masterwork, Candide, features Marilyn Hill Smith as Cunigonde and Nickolas Grace as Pangloss, Mark Beudert as Candide and Anne Howard as the old lady. These defining performances are perfectly captured on this cast album.

The Cradle will Rock

This seminal work is here given a great complete recording of the Original Cast from the Actor's Company (New York). It features Patti LuPone. Mark Blitzstein's amazing score has been acknowledged by various Broadway composers as having influenced appreciation of musical theatre. It is a precursor of the great works of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.

Dessa Rose

The Lincoln Center Theatre landmark production of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens powerful and moving work is here given a truly complete recording. Every word and every note of music as heard in the theatre is preserved on this recording. Starring two of Broadway's biggest stars LaChanze and Rachel York. Dessa Rose tells the moving story of two women's life journeys in the early 1800s.

Godspell

Godspell became an international phenomenon almost as soon as it received it's premiere off Broadway over 30 years ago. This new digital recording is the only complete recording of the score and the composer Stephen Schwartz went into the studios to conduct some young and upcoming British stars  incuding Darren Day, John Barrowman, Ruthie Henshall, Jacqueline Dankworth, Clive Rowe and others.

This complete recording of Gilbert and Sullivan's popular opera features the soloists, chorus and orchestra of the New Sadler's Wells Opera conducted by Simon Phipps. This recording contains the original version and the D'Oyly Carte Opera version of the Finale Act II. Artists include Gordon Sandison, Elizabeth Ritchie, Linda Orniston and Christopher Gill.

Jesus Christ Superstar

Considered by many to be Andrew Lloyd Weber's best work, this complete recording features theatrical actors as opposed to rock singers. This is so that a new and interesting take on Lloyd Weber's beloved score is presented to emphasise the dramatic aspects. The actors include Dave Willetts, Issy van Randwyck, Ethan Freeman, Clive Rowe and Christopher Biggins. The National Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Martin Yates.

Kismet

Broadway's tribute to the Russian composer Borodin is fabulously captured on this first and only complete recording of the show Kismet. Gloriously sung by Valerie Masterson, David Rendell, Donald Maxwell, Richard van Allan and accompanied by the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by John Owen Edwards. This score features perrenial hits such as Stranger in Paradise, And This is My Beloved, and Bubble, Bangles and Beads.

Kiss me Kate was one of Cole Porter's greatest hits, running on Broadway for over 1000 performances. This is the complete recording which uses the original orchestrations from the theatrical edition with an all star cast including Thomas Allen and Diana Montague.

Lady in the Dark

This is the only complete recording of the Kurt Weill masterwork and it is the Cast Album of the National Theatre award winning production starring Maria Friedman who won the Olivier Award for her role. The score includes great songs such as The Saga of Jenny, My Ship and Tchaikovsky. The lyrics are by Ira Gershwin.

Man of La Mancha

The international hit, Man of La Mancha is given its first and only complete recording here. For the first time such hit songs as The Impossible Dream, Dulcinea, Little Bird, Man of La Mancha and others can now be heard in the context of Don Quixote's legendary Spanish adventure. This is the original Cast Album from the Covent Garden Music Festival production starring Ron Raynes, Kim Kriswell and Avery Saltzman. The BBC Concert Orchestra is conducted by David Charles Abell.

Michael Nyman

Michael Nyman composes music for the London Contemporary Dance Theatre production of And Do They Do. This album is complimented by Alexander Balanescu interpretation on the Violin of the music from A Zed and Two Noughts from the movie entitled Zoo Caprices.

The Most Happy Fella

This is the first and only complete recording of Frank Loesser's Broadway operatic masterwork. This recording includes previously unheard but pivotal to the role of Marie arias and duets of Marie's that were cut from the original production. It features an all star cast including opera stars Louis Quilico and Nancy Shade. Also starring. in the role made famous by her mother is Broadway star and daughter of Frank Loesser, Emily Loesser (Jo Loesser also makes a cameo appearance on this recording). In addition it also features Broadway Tony Award winner Karen Ziemba, and Richard Muenz. The original orchestrations are played by the National Symphony Orchestra and conducted by John Owen Edwards.

Oklahoma

This is the Original Cast Album of Rodgers and Hammerstein's masterwork, Oklahoma! which was recorded live at the Palace Theatre, London in 1980. It stars John Diedrich, Alfred Molina, Rosamund Shelly and Madge Ryan, conducted by John Owen Edwards.

On the Town

Undoubtedly one of Bernstein’s most interesting scores, the show includes the  beautiful song "Lonely Town". This is the complete recording which uses the original orchestrations from the theatrical edition with an all start cast, including Kim Criswell, Ethan Freeman and Judy Kaye.

Pal Joey

This is the original cast recording from the recent West End production of Rodger's and Hart's masterwork Pal Joey, which starred Sian Phillips and Denis Lawson and features such hit songs as Bewitched, I Could Write a Book and Zip.

Peter Pan

The world's perennial children's beloved classic is here given a sparkling new digital recording. Starring Cathy Rigby who played the role of Peter Pan on Broadway and toured across the United States for 15 years this Original Cast Album perfectly captures her performance and the great score. Featuring songs such as I Won't Grow Up, I'm Flying, Neverland, and Hook's Tango that will delight children from 8 to 80!

Album artRichard Rogers

Richard Rogers wrote three full length Ballets for the Theatre, two of which Slaughter on Tenth Avenue and Princess Zenobia we specifically for the musical On Your Toes. The third, Ghost Town, was a ballet commissioned by George Balanchine. These recordings are the only full complete recordings of these ballets. They were conducted by John Mauceri.

Ruddigore

This complete recording of Gilbert and Sullivan's Opera features the soloists, chorus and orchestra of the New Saddler's Wells Opera conducted by Simon Phipps. The stars include  Marilyn Hill Smith, Harold Innocent, Gordon Sanderson, and Linda Ormeston.

Singin' in the Rain

This Original Studio Cast Album is of the Broadway version based on one of the greatest musical movies, Singin' in the Rain. It features stars from various productions that have played and toured the United States. The complete score, indlucing hit songs such as Singin' in the Rain, Good Morning, Moses, You are My Lucky Star, You Were Meant for Me, and the Wonderful Broadway Ballet are included on this Album.

 

Snoopy

Based on the beloved cartoon strip this musical is particularly popular with young people. This is the original cast Album of the London production of the early 1980s and it features stars such as Suzie Blake, Teddy Kempner, and Nicky Croyden, Mark Hatfield, Zoe Bright and Robert Locke.

Street Scene

Recognised as one of the greatest American operas besides Porgy and Bess, Kurt Weill's Street Scene was given a sensational production by the English National Opera in the 1989. This complete Original Cast recording (libretto and score) features Catherine Zeta Jones, Christine Ciesinski, Janice Kelly, Buonaventura Bottone and Richard van Allan. The English National Opera Orchestra and Chorus is conducted by Carl Davis.

The Student Prince

Some of Operetta's most beloved songs such as Serenade, Drinking Song, Just We Two and Deep in my Heart are sung to perfection by Marilyn Hill Smith, David Rendall, Diana Montague, Bonaventura Bottone and Norman Bailey in this first and only complete recording of Sigmund Romberg's The Student Prince. The original stage orchestrations played by the Philharmonia are conducted by John Owen Edwards.

 

The Threepenny Opera

Kurt Weill and Berthold Brecht seminal masterwork The Threepenny Opera was given a cutting edge new translation and production by the Donmar Warehouse. This original cast album captures perfectly all the nuances and venom of the work. Sharon Small delivers a chilling performance of the flick-knife song (Mack the Knife). The cast also features Tom Hollander, Tara Hugo and Beverley Klein.

Valmouth

Sandy Wilson's cult musical Valmouth was given a superlative production by the Chichester Music Theatre Festival with an all star cast. This is the cast album from that production and it includes the wonderful Bertice Reading, and stars such as Fenella Fielding, Robert Helpman, Doris Hare, Mark Wynter, Judy Campbell and others.

Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's classic score is performed by the original cast of the Lester Haymarket Theatre acclaimed production. Two starts from the world of Opera, Sally Burgess and Tinuke Olafimihan join the cast in this recording. It is the first complete recording with the original orchestrations. Hit songs include Somewhere, Tonight, Something's Coming, I Feel Pretty, America, One Hand One Heart, Officer Krupke and Cool.

The RSC presented the first stage version of the classic film The Wizard of Oz and this is the cast album from that production. One of the greatest songs ever written, Over the Rainbow, comes from this score. For the stage version the authors included a lot of music that was left out of the movie.

The third Leonard Bernstein New York musical, Wonderful Town, is here given its first and only complete recording. This exciting score includes songs such as Ohio, A Quiet Girl, A Little Bit in Love, Swing, It's Love and One Hundred Easy Ways. The cast includes some of Broadway's best and brightest, Ron Raynes, Karen Mason, Rebecca Luker and Gregg Edelman. The original Broadway orchestration is played the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Owen Edwards.
