In choosing music for a dinner party some important practical considerations come into play. Conversation is very difficult if it has to compete with the massed forces of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus! It’s probably best, therefore, to stick to works performed by smaller forces. Often Baroque or Classical music is suitable as background music because that was its original function.
