Sentimental comic ballet Coppélia premiered at the Théâtre Impérial de l´Opéra in 1870 with music by Léo Delibes and 16-year old ballerina Giuseppina Bozzacchi in the starring role.

Based on two macabre stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann, Der Sandmann (The Sandman), and Die Puppe (The Doll), the ballet tells the story of a mysterious inventor who creates a life-size dancing doll. The work went on to become the most-performed ballet at the Palais Garnier, the home of ballet in Paris from 1875 - 1989.
