Jay Leonhart was born in Baltimore, MD, and began studying piano at the Peabody Institute at the age of 6. At age 8, he turned to stringed instruments and quickly began working as a banjoist with the Rivers Chambers Orchestra. Soon thereafter he became intrigued with the double bass and at the age of 15 began working as a bassist in Baltimore and Washington, DC. He studied bass at Peabody and then with Ray Brown in Toronto. He has since gone on to become one of the world's outstanding jazz and recording bassists, having performed and recorded with most of the major artists in jazz and pop music over the past 40 years.
