(Marie) Joseph Canteloube (de Calaret)

French Born 21 Oct 1879 Died 04 Nov 1957
Born in Annonay, Canteloube studied with d'Indy at the Schola Cantorum. A keen enthomusicologist, he collected many folk songs from his homeland, often publishing them set to piano or orchestral accompaniment. His collections Chants d'Auvergne, put out between 1923 and 1930, are especially popular. They are appealing works with little of the cloying sentimentality one might expect from an endeavour with such well-meaning origins; the luminous orchestration makes these works as modern as one might expect an original work by a French composer of the time.
