Formed by Trevor Pinnock in 1973, The English Concert began as a group of seven players (five strings, transverse flute and harpsichord) but has since expanded into a chamber orchestra. With a worldwide reputation for the quality of their performances, they have established themselves as one of Britain's leading period instrument ensembles.

Their repertoire ranges from chamber music to opera, and recent tours have seen them travel all over Europe, to the US, South America, and Japan. In 2001, The English Concert took a new Jonathan Miller production of Handel's Tamerlano on tour and 2002 will see them concentrate on J S Bach's religious masterpieces, the St. Matthew Passion and the Christmas Oratorio.

In 2003, Trevor Pinnock will step down as the group's artistic director to be replaced by violinist Andrew Manze.
