Thomas Igloi was born in Budapest in 1947 and died tragically in the prime of his career in 1976. He came to Britain in 1957 and studied at the Royal Academy of Music under Douglas Cameron, and later with Fournier and Casals. He won the BBC Cello Competition in 1967 and the Gaspar Cassado International Competition in Florence in 1971.
He was soloist with most of the major London and Provincial Orchestras and appeared at the Royal Festival Hall and the BBC Proms. After his performances of the complete Bach Solo Suites in London in 1972 he was invited to repeat the cycle the next year at the Bach Festival, Kennedy Center, Washington DC.
He toured and broadcast extensively in Britain and all over Europe, appeared in several major Festivals, and was a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
