Clara Schumann was a German pianist, and was married to Robert Schumann.
Born Clara Wieck, she studied with her father, Frederick Wieck, and made her concert debut at the age of nine. She quickly developed into a great virtuoso pianist, and in spite of her parents' disapproval, married Robert Schumann in 1840. She became the foremost interpreter of his works, and performed them regularly.
She was very impressed with the young Brahms, encouraging him in his youth and becoming a lifelong friend.
She wrote many works for the piano including a concerto, as well as numerous cadenzas for concertos by Mozart and Beethoven.
