The origins of the Musique de la Garde Républicaine stretch back to 1848, though the group did not make their first official appearance until 1852 during a trooping of the colour on the Champ de Mars in Paris. Drawing public praise from the Military Governor of Paris, Filed-Marshal Magnan, the ensemble's young conductor and founder, Paulus, turned the simple group into a brass and reed orchestra with the name 'Musique de la Garde de Paris'.
In 1871 the group was renamed 'Musique de la Garde Républicaine' and, from 1872, began a series of foreign tours that have taken it all over the world as a representative of French culture.
